The first time I read the book, I was shocked to learn the tribulations Gayle internalized during high school, as she always seemed cheerful and happy. I appreciate how difficult it must have been for Gayle to expose her deepest secrets to the public in this book. The second time I read this book it was from the perspective of someone dealing with difficult people. Unfortunately, for Gayle, she had to learn how to deal with difficult people the hard way, through trial and error. Gayle does a remarkable job providing the reader with suggestions and tools to not only recognize you are dealing with a difficult person, but also how to deal with and recover from the toxicity these people bring.
