Without sharing too many mundane details, in about 5 billion years when our sun runs out of hydrogen, it will swell into a red giant, destroying and absorbing whatever is left of the inner planets in our solar system, including Earth. That’s what scientists have hypothesized.

Five billion years is a long way off, but what if it wasn’t?
